Panga waste management enterprise: WIN WIN for all

Mr.  Sarab Maharjan, inhabitant of Panga, Kirtipur, also the coordinator of Society of environment Conservation,  is happy to own the waste management enterprise support in coordination with “Fohor Byawasthapan Kirtipur Samuha”.  With this support from the PRISM project, more than 600 households are getting benefited as of their discharged waste are being managed properly.  They used to collect the household segregated waste and have separate collection centre.

Mr.  Sarab Maharjan, inhabitant of Panga, Kirtipur, also the coordinator of Society of environment Conservation,  is happy to own the waste management enterprise support in coordination with “Fohor Byawasthapan Kirtipur Samuha”.  With this support from the PRISM project, more than 600 households are getting benefited as of their discharged waste are being managed properly.  They used to collect the household segregated waste and have separate collection centre. The collected biodegradable wastes are converted into quality compost using the machine and recyclable wastes are sold to the scrap buyer, who processed to recycling units. “This has helped us a lot. Waste collection was our serious problems and people litter them in the streets, that nuisance as well as deteriorated our surroundings. Now we started with the support of informal waste workers, keeping their share in the investment from the project and the community also supported for the operation of the enterprise.” Mr. Maharjan shares openly.

Centre for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD) has implemented the PRISM Project with the funding support of the European Union and the Practical Action in 5 municipalities of the Kathmandu Valley to uplift the economic and social status of Informal waste workers. This is one of the enterprises that have been supported for the group named “Fohor Byawasthapan Kirtipur Samuha” a self help group of informal waste workers living at Kirtipur. CIUD provided away, a organic waste converter machine, 150 sets of Plastic baskets, folding racks, shed and other accessories that required for the operation of the enterprise. CIUD also supported them to have built the three sectioned toilet with the facilities of the clean water, hand washing and showering units for both male and female workers.

Till this date, they already raised fund of Rs. 1,00,000 as savings and hundreds of visitors from different municipalities has visited  to observed this successfully implemented enterprise to make the community clean, green and healthy environment. This has directly benefited to the 20 informal waste workers and the entire community of Panga, Kirtipur.

Through the continued monitoring and support to the community, and facilitation from CIUD,  Solid Waste management Technical Support centre (SWMTSC) has also recently supported 800 waste segregated BINs for 400 further more households to scale up the enterprise.

Mr. Maharjan was wondering how to manage the generated solid waste management in his community. He used to segregate waste and through his initiative, the women groups through the Cooperative named “Panga Women Saving and Credit Cooperative Limited” were introduced several Solid waste management training in household level.
