“We need some bags of rice to feed the needy families. We have lost our settlement, and we have not yet got even adequate tents, and now we are very scared due to the onset of monsoon” says MrPremNagarkoti, a community person of TanaGaun, Khadgabhadrakali VDC of Kathmandu district.
(in fact the community has received only 6 pieces of tarpaulins sheets from ward office, and few kilograms of rice per family)
Out of 59 houses in the old core settlement, 34 houses are ruined by the earthquake. This has exposed the poor community, rather an ultra-poor community, to critical vulnerability of lack of food, shelter and health risks – all cumulating at this critical time of national level disaster.
CIUD has assessed the community and have provided support to this community with some basic needs like food items, water disinfection solution (piyush), phenyl and mosquito nets.
We are seriously looking into the possibilities to support the community for managing temporary shelter, before the monsoon adds-up troubles to the homeless. We are coordinating with local government agencies and stakeholders, and we hope our advocacy for the ultra-poor communities will bring more support from the government to the most-neediest ones.
