Using Toilet is a Must Habit is What Kamala Says……………

52-years-old Kamala Shrestha is a single woman who has been living with her son and family in Pathichaur-2, Panauti Municipality for more than 3 decades after her marriage.

Before the devastating earthquake in 2015, Kamala had a toilet in her own house which was constructed with the support of an organization. She had been using toilets since then but the earthquake in 2015 turned her house and the toilet into debris.  Somehow she managed to live in a temporary shelter without toilet. As she was single and was in dire need of the safe sanitation facility, CIUD supported her to rebuild a toilet near her temporary shelter to improve the sanitation facility.

Previously, she was practicing temporary unsafe toilet which was quite far from the house as it was not safely managed and was smelly too. Even though having knowledge of risk of diseases she was not being able to build safe toilet.

Centre for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD) implemented “Community Led Resilient and Sustainable WASH Project” in Kusadevi ward No. 2 and 3, Panauti Municipality with the support of WaterAid Nepal/HSBC, in Kavre district from June 2017 with prime goal of providing access to safe and adequate water and sanitation facilities to the marginalized communities, providing safe drinking water for over 1784 people and supporting 100 families with household latrines.

Kamala Shrestha was one of the beneficiaries of the project. After receiving support from CIUD, she has finally rebuilt her new toilet which is safer and cleaner than the one being used before.

Today she is very happy to have a new toilet near her temporary shelter. She happily shares, “Now my grandchildren will also use the toilet rather than going out for open defecation. I think in villages it is more important to develop habit of using toilet through awareness and encouragement..

Thank you CIUD and WaterAid Nepal for providing the support!!!!
