Temporary Shelters (TS) Background & Objective Center for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD) team has been working closely with earthquake-affected communities in and around Kathmandu Valley to build suitable temporary shelters to live in. Our main goal is to address the immediate needs of the community post-disaster. Many families have expressed safety concerns and need for stable temporary shelters. Our temporary shelter project is in collaboration with local community engagement, with the financial support from UN Habitat (Japan& Mojang), Action Aid Nepal, Blueberry Fund, Joyson Fund. (more…)

Kathmandu, June 5th - A public Rainwater Resource Center (RC) was inaugurated in the premises of Nepal Japan Children Library in Lainchaur, Kathmandu on June 5th , 2013. This ‘one of a kind RC’ was established by the efforts of Center for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD), Gusingal, Lalitpur with the funds made available by UNDP-Nepal and Coca Cola Company. March 22nd, 2013 the surroundings of Nala echoed with the following words, "We, the residents of Ugrachandi Nala VDC commit that from today onwards, we will not defecate in the open and our toilet doors will always remain unlocked for visitors!" The loud and proud commitment indicated that Ugrachandi Nala VDC of Kavre had been declared an Open Defecation Free Zone. (more…)

Bhuikhel Pond located near famous Swayambhunath Temple, also called “Paleshwa Pukhu” (a pond of special flower in Newari language which is predominantly spoken in Kathmandu Valley) had turned into an impromptu waste disposal area before Centre for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD) intervened there during the implementation of the UNDP- Nepal and Coca Cola Company funded “Invaluable Drops- Recharge Kathmandu” project. Tanani is a typical newar community that is located in Brahma Tole-12, Teku, Kathmandu. It is a small “old Kathmandu” community that houses 40 families who deal with shortage of water throughout the year. “I would say not having enough water is our biggest problem”, says Sabin Maharjan, a local youth. A water connection from Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL), the premier water organization for Kathmandu exists in the community, but it’s been a while since anybody has seen water flow through it. "Believe me it was really very difficult to walk through this area as defecation was openly practiced. Moreover, the household waste was dumped haphazardly. The situation was awful, "reminisces Surendra Maharjan, a member of local youth club of Harisiddhi VDC. He describes the initial attempts; the local youths tried their best in finding the solution to keep the area sanitized that is ultimately the resultant of inadequate toilets and human behaviour. "We are living here since ten years. Everybody wants us go away from here. One day someone came to us asking how we could be helped, I could not believe it," said Ranjita Devi Podar, an informal waste worker living at Boudha Fulbari settlement.  She grieved," nobody wants us because of our job. We bring in the recyclables that the people throw away, yes! But we collect it and bring it here not to dump and pollute, rather we organize it to be sold. At a time when the whole country is expecting the political deadlock to be resolved to have a new constitution of Nepal, the youths in Khokana were inundated cleaning their ponds. Over a hundred youth participants organized the cleaning program of "Kha Phukhu" and “De Pukuh” at Khokana VDC to observe the Water Festival “Sithi Nakha” on May 27. The community in Khokana actively participated in the pond cleaning program supported by the Centre for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD) in association with World Vision International Nepal (WVIN).  (more…)
