Over 1490 households have been displaced by devastating earthquake of 12th of Baishak 2072 BS (25th of April, 2015), in Nala VDC of Kavre District. Immediately, there were the signs of miserable situation in different community of Nala VDC which are full of harmony and cultural richness. The families of 814 houses that were totally damaged are now living in the temporary shelters (Campsites). 4 human losses occurred in Nala VDC, and around 52 people were seriously injured. (more…)

Itagol - a community of Kirtipur, one of the hard-hit old cities of Kathmandu Once a community full of harmony and cultural richness, ‘Itagol’ is now much of a torn-down place with over 80 households totally ruined by the devastating earthquake which struck Nepal on 25th April 2015. The encroachment of public open spaces and forests, drying-up of ponds and water sources are the problems observed on preservation frontier. On the other hand, lack of managed green spaces for children to play, elderly to meet and the population to have some recreational time is the problem from perspective of daily life quality to be addressed in urban planning. Centre for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD) has been working with the communities of Kirtipur and Kirtipur Municipality for more than two years to revitalize the public open spaces of Kiritpur. Panga waste management enterprise: WIN WIN for all

Mr.  Sarab Maharjan, inhabitant of Panga, Kirtipur, also the coordinator of Society of environment Conservation,  is happy to own the waste management enterprise support in coordination with "Fohor Byawasthapan Kirtipur Samuha".  With this support from the PRISM project, more than 600 households are getting benefited as of their discharged waste are being managed properly.  They used to collect the household segregated waste and have separate collection centre. DandaTole is a community of 42 households and lies in ward number 16. The ward is across Kamalamairiver and the community is among the geographically remote communities of the ward. Access to safe drinking water was a dream for the people of the community. Usually “we have to walk an hour for a bucket of water” says Bhuwan Kafle a women of the community. This increased work load for women. Sometimes when they used water directly from the river, they used to face health problems. (more…)

What are the costs of urbanization? There are many of them, but down the list, one of the major concerns is ‘preservation of natural resource systems’ as landscapes change into urban centers. Nepal has urbanization rate of 4.8% which is the highest in the region. However, urban planning and management are quite far behind. This case entails role of local stakeholders in preserving a local pond. Nhu Pukhu is an ancient pond ofthe city of Patan. ‘Nhu’ representing short form of word ‘Nhugu’ in local Newari language meaning ‘new’ and is also referred to as ‘Rani Pukhu’, a queen’s pond. (more…)

Public open spaces with ponds, ancient temples and archeological sites, traditional settings for public rest places, the Patis (Falcha in local language) and fabulous designs - all are attractions of Kirtipur - a City of Glory. It is one of the historical and ancients places of Kathmandu. Open spaces are used for daily life activities, for cultural activities, rituals and recreation. In recent days, the attention to these spaces is decreasing, and the management is lacking. (more…)
