Bhuikhel Pond located near famous Swayambhunath Temple, also called “Paleshwa Pukhu” (a pond of special flower in Newari language which is predominantly spoken in Kathmandu Valley) had turned into an impromptu waste disposal area before Centre for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD) intervened there during the implementation of the UNDP- Nepal and Coca Cola Company funded “Invaluable Drops- Recharge Kathmandu” project. Bhukhel’s woes began when the area surrounding the pond saw a proliferation in the number of houses in the last decade. (more…)

Tanani is a typical newar community that is located in Brahma Tole-12, Teku, Kathmandu. It is a small “old Kathmandu” community that houses 40 families who deal with shortage of water throughout the year. “I would say not having enough water is our biggest problem”, says Sabin Maharjan, a local youth. A water connection from Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL), the premier water organization for Kathmandu exists in the community, but it’s been a while since anybody has seen water flow through it. "Believe me it was really very difficult to walk through this area as defecation was openly practiced. Moreover, the household waste was dumped haphazardly. The situation was awful, "reminisces Surendra Maharjan, a member of local youth club of Harisiddhi VDC. He describes the initial attempts; the local youths tried their best in finding the solution to keep the area sanitized that is ultimately the resultant of inadequate toilets and human behaviour. "We are living here since ten years. Everybody wants us go away from here. One day someone came to us asking how we could be helped, I could not believe it," said Ranjita Devi Podar, an informal waste worker living at Boudha Fulbari settlement.  She grieved," nobody wants us because of our job. We bring in the recyclables that the people throw away, yes! But we collect it and bring it here not to dump and pollute, rather we organize it to be sold. At a time when the whole country is expecting the political deadlock to be resolved to have a new constitution of Nepal, the youths in Khokana were inundated cleaning their ponds. Over a hundred youth participants organized the cleaning program of "Kha Phukhu" and “De Pukuh” at Khokana VDC to observe the Water Festival “Sithi Nakha” on May 27. The community in Khokana actively participated in the pond cleaning program supported by the Centre for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD) in association with World Vision International Nepal (WVIN).  (more…)

A stakeholders meeting called by the Ugrachandi Nala Village Development Committee (VDC) on 10th May 2012 decided to make the VDC an Open Defecation (ODF) Zone within 2012.  The meeting attended by the major political party representatives and the Drinking Water Supply and Sewerage Office, Kavre committed to work together to achieve the target.Acknowledging the contribution made by the Center for integrated Urban Development (CIUD) in the area, it has been nominated a member in the Village Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Coordination Committee (V-WASHCC) in a meeting chaired by the Ward Secretary of Ugrachandi Nala VDC. Sumitra Pariyar, 35, resident of Ugrachandi Nala Village Development Committee (VDC) has now her own toilet constructed at the intervention of Community led Urban Environmental Sanitation (CLUES) programme for the past six months. It was the awareness programs that led this Pariyar family to divert from open defecation to using toilet which is connected to septic tank at present as the construction of sewer systems with the treatment plant is yet to complete. She feels that this has improved her lifestyle in terms of ease of addressing nature's call and health of her entire family. (more…)

An agreement between Center for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD) and the Nala Integrated Development Committee (NIDC) was signed on 8th April, 2012 for taking forward the second phase of Community Led Urban Environmental Sanitation (CLUES) programme at Nala. Amidst a function, Prakash Amatya, Executive Director at CIUD signed the agreement with the committee. (more…)
