Bijaya Laxmi Maharjan, wife of Chiri Babu Maharjan, sought shelter under a single tent during first 5 days after the earthquake. During this time of post-disaster, the local community of Nagaun worked together to arrange shelter for each other.“It was difficult for my daughters when we lived under a tent. They were unable to study because of all the noise. You could hear between the walls.” On the other hand, BijayaLaxmi’s permanent house lies in the narrow alley further down from community center. Happily shifted in my own Temporary Shelter

Thirty-five years old Gyani Maharjan is among the ethnic inhabitants of Devdhoka, ward number 2 of Kirtipur Municipality whose house was damaged by the devastating earthquake of 25th April, 2015. The traditional styled Newari house was built more than 85 years back during her grand -mother in law's time. It has been totally damaged from inside which needs to be reconstructed. (more…)

CIUD has implemented the project with support of UN-Habitat (‘from the People of Japan’ funded) in 4 districts of Nepal (Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur and Dolakha). The project has selected the families who have been hard hit by the April 25th Gorakha Earthquake, and priority has been given to earthquake affected poor families; families with elderly, children, pregnant women; families with disabled people and women headed families.   (more…)

Safer temporary shelter to reduce vulnerability due to April 2015 Gorakha Earthquake

Gamcha is a small cluster of ultra-poor communities at Kirtipur, situated about 10 km south-west from Kathmandu. The place has been hard-hit by the earthquake of 25th and 26th April 2015. In total, over 35 households have been fully damaged in the core settlement of Gamcha (Tallo Gamcha and Mathillo Gamcha) out of around 60 households in the core settlement. Mrs Chandra Maharjan is one of the beneficiaries of the temporary shelter supported by UN-Habitat. (more…)

UNHABITAT Regional Director visit Gamcha

Gamcha - an ultra-poor community in Kirtipur Municipality of Kathmandu was visited by Mr.Yoshinobu Fukasawa, Regional Director at the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) based in Fukuoka, Japan. He had arrived in Kathmandu to participate in the ‘International Conference on Nepal’s Reconstruction 2015’ held on 25th June, 2015. After the conference, he visited one of the communities where CIUD has supported the communities build their temporary shelters before the monsoon started. (more…)

The message was clear loud and clear “Keep our Earth Clean even during the time of disaster; and use toilets to stay healthy”. CIUD stayed committed to promote WASH also at this time of disaster, and hence during 16th National Sanitation Week CIUD (5th to 11th June 2015) coordinated with District WASH Clusters of Lalitpur, Kavre and Sindhuli to celebrate the sanitation week to help the vulnerable communities. ‘Some wards are safe, but some wards are very much affected by the disastrous earthquake’, says Mr. BinodKhakural - staff of Kamalamai Municipality. Hence CIUD requested WAN for urgent relief support, and thus Piyush, ORS packets, 150 tarpaulin sheets, 100 sets of hygiene kits, 50 sets of buckets with jars and cleaning materials were provided to the municipality.
